About
"A fine work of art - music, dance, painting, story - has the power to silence the chatter in the mind and lift us to another place." - Robert McKee
Audrey Cushman grew up surrounded by a large extended family that celebrated the arts. Family gatherings were filled with painters, musicians, writers, photographers, chefs, a potter, and a glass blower. She was most drawn to the visual arts, inspired by her aunt and grandfather, and she began painting at a young age.
Davidson College and UNC-Chapel Hill prepared Audrey for a career as a Professional School Counselor, but she returned to her love of the arts when she became a mother in 2010. She paints landscapes with oils in an impressionistic style and has developed a passion for painting outdoors in the “plein air” tradition. She can be spotted with her portable easel around eastern North Carolina painting marshes, rivers, fields, wildflowers, beaches, sailboats, cloudscapes, and historic homes. Recently, Audrey has enjoyed teaching landscape painting classes in New Bern.
Audrey has received awards for her paintings and has been accepted into multiple American Impressionist Society exhibitions. She won the Quick Paint at the 2022 New Bern Plein Air Festival and participated as a featured artist the following year. In 2023 she was the featured artist at the Beaufort Historic Society's Fall Party at the Mattie King Gallery. She is a member of Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, the Twin Rivers Artists Association, and the Coastal Plein Air Painters.
Audrey's paintings can be viewed at Carolina Creations in New Bern, Salt Studio and Gallery in Morehead City, and the Mattie King Davis Art Gallery in Beaufort.
